Euro 2016 is just around the corner and excitement is brewing. Can our young England squad show the world how talented they are and bring the nation home its first major football trophy since the World Cup in 1966?
Euro 2016 – come on England!
Roy Hodgson has provided us with a few surprises in his final 23 man squad. The inclusion of Jack Wilshere over Danny Drinkwater has raised a few eyebrows. Wilshere has unfortunately been plagued with injury woes over recent seasons, whilst Danny Drinkwater has just lifted the Premier League trophy with Leicester after a stunning campaign. What’s more, naming an uncapped 18 year old in the final squad has been labelled a gamble by pundits and fans alike. However, Marcus Rashford’s goal scoring form for Manchester United has devastated defences over the last couple of months, and there is no question he is a seriously talented footballer. I hope he has the opportunity to shine in this summer’s tournament like he did on his debut against Australia!
The current England team has heaps of potential. The strike force that fans are expecting to start against Russia on the 11th June consists of Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, who between them knocked in a colossal 49 Premier League goals last season. However, the pair combined have just 20 England senior caps, less than Adam Lallana! Last season’s PFA Young Player of the Year was Dele Alli and he looks fit and raring to go for the tournament ahead. He was monumental in helping Tottenham qualify for the Champions League last season and was a star performer throughout the season (remember his goal against Crystal Palace?). At the age of 20, it is no surprise he only has 8 caps, but I for one am very excited to see how he performs in France.
Danny Rose was the only English defender to make the PFA Premier League Team of the Year 2016. He had a wonderful campaign with Tottenham and is likely to be joined by Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill at the back. I haven’t mentioned a right back, because I still don’t know who should start out of Kyle Walker or Nathaniel Clyne. Thankfully, the decision is in Roy’s hands and not mine!
